A FIELD GUIDE TO LOST CREATURES of the LA river

This is a project in development about the ecosystem of the Los Angeles River, named one of America's Most Endangered Rivers in 2022. It was aggressively channelized in the 1930s as a flood control measure, foregrounding human needs over our seasonal river's important role in the local ecosystem; a bittersweet compromise. As a result, numerous species of animals and plants were extirpated from the river. I am building an embroidered field guide to those lost creatures and indicating their threatened status with the intentional destructive unraveling of the stitching.
