Arroyo ChubStatus: Species of special concern in California.
Range: Big Tujunga Canyon, Santa Ana River, Malibu Creek Average length: 3-4" The arroyo chub once thrived in the Arroyo Seco stream that flows from the San Gabriel mountains into the Los Angeles river. After the completion of the Devil's Gate dam and subsequent concretization of the stream bed, the small arroyo chub has been lost. It can still be found in a few other systems in Southern California, but its future is uncertain.
Arroyo chub serve as both predators and prey in the ecosystem, providing food for young steelhead. They require slow moving muddy or sandy streams. |
