Southern California Steelhead

Status: Endangered
Range: From the Santa Maria River to the US-Mexico Border
Average size: 20-30 inches

The steelhead form of rainbow trout live much of their adult lives in the ocean, but must return to gravel-bottomed fresh water streams and rivers to spawn. The Southern California Steelhead is an endangered species due to threats from urbanization and dams.

Southern steelhead have longer, more streamlined bodies to enable them to navigate southern California's seasonal waterways.
