South Coast Marsh VoleStatus: Threatened (CDFW species of special concern)
Range: From Point Magu, Ventura County, to Sunset Beach, Orange County. Average size: 6-8 inches The south coast marsh vole lives in coastal marshes and freshwater wetlands. Channelization of the Los Angeles river eliminated those habitats along it's length, and the marsh vole's habitat is now mostly restricted to wetlands along the coast.
They are herbivorous and often considered agricultural pests, but perform an important role in the local ecology, including as food for foxes, red-tailed hawks, and other predators. |
