Western Pond Turtle

Status: Species of special concern in California. 
Range: Southern Washington state to California
​Average length: 7-9"
​
The western pond turtle is the only native freshwater turtle in its historic range. Populations of the western pond turtle have declined as much as 80% in some areas due to habitat loss. They have also been displaced by non-native species such as the red-eared slider and the American bullfrog.
